Is It Right For Your Parents To Be Yelling At You Just To Be Happy?

In The Past Two and A Half Years, My Parents were yelling at me to be happy. You Can’t just tell someone to Be happy and expect them to be, right? It’s been happening to me because I’ve lost my best friend to Suicide. And I’ve been thinking of that since then. And when my parents found out I was cutting myself just to relieve me of some of the pain, my mother was very angry with me and started yelling at me and won’t ever let me forget I “Sliced up my arms”. It gets me annoyed for her always yelling at me for everytime I try to do something nice. So I gave that up and stopped talking, and when I wouldn’t talk at all, my parents threatened to put me into a Psychiatric ward for the rest of my life if I just don’t be happy, so each day, I’m living a Lie…Is this right?

It sounds like there is a need for some serious family counseling!
Losing a friend to suicide, is very serious. They often don’t consider how it will effect the people around them, and sadly, the people that aren’t directly effected tend to think the same way.

This is something you really need to bring to the attention of an adult you trust. A teacher, doctor, neighbor. Someone that can help you even if it includes temporarily removing yourself from the situation. Whether or not they realize it, your parents are being mentally abusive, and no person deserves that.

I understand what you are going through. I was in a similar situation, but was not able to go to anyone since my neighbors were my family and didn’t see anything wrong with how things in the house were.

Please, seek some sort of help. Cutting yourself, and suicide are not the answer. If you need someone to talk to, please, feel free to message or e-mail me. I will do my best to be made available for support or call the youth crisis hot line:
